Ten steps a small business owner can follow in an afternoon, from deciding what the site must do to the first 30 days after launch, including the checks the AI will not do for you.
An AI builder can put a complete draft of your website on screen in a few minutes. That part is no longer the hard bit. The hard bit is everything around it: knowing what the site has to achieve, giving the AI the facts it cannot make up, catching the ones it made up anyway, and doing the dull setup that gets you found on Google. This guide takes you through all ten steps in the order we would do them, using a small mobile dog grooming business as the running example. Set aside an afternoon and have your photos ready.
Before you open any builder, finish this sentence: "A visitor who likes what they see should be able to..." For most small businesses the ending is one of three: send an enquiry, book a time, or buy something. Pick the main one. A site can do all three, but only one gets the big button at the top of every page.
That choice shapes everything else. An enquiry site needs a short form and a visible phone number, a booking site needs services with durations and prices, and a shop needs photos, delivery costs and a returns policy. It also decides your plan, because store and booking tools are rarely on a builder's cheapest tier.
Then list the pages and keep it short. Our groomer needs five: Home, Grooming and prices, Areas we cover, About Sam (the groomer) and Book. If you offer several distinct services, give each its own page, because people search for the service, not your business name.
An AI can write a fluent sentence about anything. It cannot know your prices, hours or service area, so it will either leave a gap or fill it with something plausible. Gather these first:
Put it all in one document, because you will paste from it in steps 4 and 5. Our AI website checklist has the full list, with a note on why each item matters.
Most big builders now draft a site from a description, including Wix, Squarespace and Hostinger as well as us, so the first draft is no longer what separates them. These questions do:
We compare the main options against these questions in the best AI website builders in 2026, including where an older platform is the better pick. An honest note on ours: WebNewBiz is young, with a much smaller app ecosystem and community than Wix, Squarespace or Shopify. What it offers instead is the website, online store and CRM in one system, with hosting and SSL on every plan.
Your description is the brief the AI works from, so a vague one gets a vague site. Use the facts from step 2. A short version for our groomer:
Example: "Muddy Paws is a mobile dog grooming van run by one groomer, Sam, covering Evanston, Skokie and Wilmette. We groom outside your door, so nervous dogs avoid a noisy salon. Full groom from $55 for small dogs and $75 for large dogs; nail trim $15. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm. Customers are busy owners and owners of older or anxious dogs. Main goal: booking requests; second: phone calls. Tone: warm and plain, no dog puns. Pages: Home, Grooming and prices, Areas we cover, About Sam, Book."
In under 100 words that covers the business, place, prices, customer, goal, tone and pages. In WebNewBiz you type a description like this and the AI drafts the complete site (pages, layout and copy) ready to edit in your browser, or you start from a template and let the AI fill it in. For the five things every description needs, and how to word follow-up requests, see our prompt guide.
This is the step people skip, and the one that matters most. AI writing fills gaps with things that sound right. Read every line, out loud if you can, and look for:
The testimonials point is legal as well as ethical. The US FTC's rule on reviews and testimonials, in force since October 2024, names AI-generated fake reviews explicitly, and the UK has banned fake reviews since April 2025. A placeholder review left on a live site is a fake review.
Google's guidance on generative AI content says the same about the writing: fact-check AI output before publishing, and do not generate many pages without adding value, which can break its spam policy on scaled content abuse.
Once the facts are right, make it sound like you. Editing by chat suits changes you can describe in a sentence. In WebNewBiz that is the AI Copilot: our groomer types "On the Grooming page, add a short section on older dogs: we take breaks and use a non-slip mat" and it makes the change, no code involved. Editing by hand suits precise fixes like one price, and WebNewBiz's visual editor, Design Studio, comes with Starter and above.
If step 1 said "buy" or "book", set it up before launch and test it as a customer would.
The WebNewBiz online store comes with Starter and above: cart, secure checkout, cards through Stripe plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, running on WooCommerce, Shopify or our own engine.
For bookings, decide your notice period, cancellation terms and any deposit, and state them on the booking page in plain words. On WebNewBiz, bookings are handled in the AI CRM from the Growth plan.
Your domain is the one part of the site you own outright.
WebNewBiz's Growth plan includes a free domain for the first year, or you can connect one you own through domains.
Use an email address on your domain, not free webmail. Google Workspace Business Starter is $7 per user per month at standard annual pricing at the time of writing; Microsoft 365 is the usual alternative. Whichever you choose, set up SPF and DKIM records: Gmail requires every sender to use at least one, and without them your replies can land in spam.
You do not need an agency to launch. You need five things right, all from Google's own documentation:
Skip the meta keywords tag, which Google does not use. Do not keep requesting indexing either: the URL Inspection tool has a quota, repeat requests do not speed things up, and Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks.
If customers visit you or you travel to them, create a free Google Business Profile too. Our SEO tools check the on-page items for you.
Before sharing the link, spend 20 minutes on this:
The checklist covers the after-launch Google steps in more detail. Then give the first month a shape:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Submit the sitemap, set up your Business Profile, send the link to existing customers |
| Week 2 | Ask five recent happy customers for a Google review; add the best quotes to the site with permission |
| Week 3 | Read every enquiry, note the questions the site did not answer, and add the answers |
| Week 4 | Check Search Console's Performance report for the searches showing your pages; write one page for the service people ask about most |
After that, half an hour a month is enough. Google's own guide says some changes take effect in hours and others take months, so judge results over weeks. On Growth and above, WebNewBiz sends site enquiries into the AI CRM automatically, which makes week 3 easier.
How long does it take to build a website with AI?
The first draft takes minutes. A small business site you would send to customers usually takes an afternoon if your photos, prices and details are ready, because most of the time goes on checking facts and editing. Connecting a domain can add a few hours, occasionally a day or two, while the DNS change takes effect.
Can I build a business website with ChatGPT alone?
A general chatbot can write copy and even code, but a website also needs hosting, a domain, working forms, security updates and a way to edit it later. An AI website builder bundles those. With a chatbot alone, you assemble and maintain them yourself.
Will Google penalise a website written with AI?
Not for being written with AI. Google asks site owners to fact-check AI content before publishing and warns that generating many pages without adding value can break its spam policy on scaled content abuse. Accurate, specific pages that help customers are fine.
How much does it cost to build a website with AI?
Budget for a builder subscription, a domain (about $11 a year or more to renew a .com) and, optionally, business email at around $7 per user per month. On WebNewBiz every plan is $1 for the first month, then $9 a month for one website, or $29 a month with an online store.
Do I need technical skills?
No. You need to describe your business clearly and check the result carefully. The two slightly technical jobs, connecting a domain and verifying Search Console, both come down to copying a record into your domain settings.
The quickest way to learn this is to do steps 1 and 2 on paper, then type your description into the AI Website Builder and see what comes back. Every plan is $1 for the first month with no minimum contract, so you can start for $1 and decide once you have seen a real draft of your own site.
