Webflow gives you front-end control and code export. Wix Studio gives you an easier ramp and business features in the box. Here is how to choose per client.
Design studios argue about these two tools more than any others. Webflow hands you a visual editor built on the CSS box model, real front-end control and code export. Wix Studio hands you a gentler ramp and a pile of business features already in the box: stores, bookings, events, ticketing. Most of that argument is about which editor a designer prefers. The decision that actually pays your bills is different: what the client has to run after launch, and who is still maintaining the site in year three. This guide compares both on that basis, with prices checked in October 2026.

Pick Webflow when the design is the product and someone technical keeps working on the site after launch: brand sites, content-heavy marketing sites, projects where layout precision and custom interactions win the pitch.
Pick Wix Studio when the client runs a business through the site rather than just publishing one: taking payments, taking bookings, selling tickets, posting content weekly, logging into a dashboard without calling you first.
That split is the honest version. Independent comparisons land in roughly the same place: Webflow leads on code-level control, Wix Studio leads on speed to a finished, client-ready site. Neither is the better tool in the abstract, they are aimed at different hand-offs.
| Question | Wix Studio | Webflow |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Studios shipping quickly, clients who self-serve | Designers who want CSS-level control |
| Ramp-up for a designer | Days | Weeks, and CSS knowledge helps a lot |
| Store in the box | Yes, on the mid plans and up | Separate ecommerce plan, 2% fee on Standard |
| Bookings, events, tickets | Built in | Third-party tools you integrate and support |
| Client editing | Content mode: text and media only | Content editor role on the Webflow canvas |
| Code export | No | Yes on paid Workspace plans, with real exclusions |
| Cost to build | No charge to build, you pay when a site publishes | Paid Freelancer or Agency Workspace, plus seats |
| Agency-branded client login | Partial (partner Custom Branding) | No |
Webflow's Designer is a visual front end over CSS. You work with display, position, flexbox and grid, you name classes, you reuse them, and if you understand the box model you will feel at home within hours. If you do not, the first week is genuinely hard. The payoff is control: nothing is hidden behind a template system, interactions are built element by element, and a senior designer can match a Figma file closely.
Wix Studio comes at the same job from the other side. You get canvas editing with a responsive layout system (section grid, stack, flexbox, custom breakpoints), no-code animations with scroll, hover, click and loop triggers, a Figma plugin for importing designs, and AI helpers for sitemaps and wireframes. When the visual tools run out, Wix Studio accepts custom CSS to override default styles, JavaScript written in the browser or locally with any npm package, backend functions and data hooks, a VS Code based IDE with GitHub integration, and Wix Headless APIs if you want Wix business features behind a front end you build yourself.
Treat training timelines sceptically. Published estimates for getting a team productive in Webflow range from a week to a few months, and they are mostly guesses. The reliable test is cheaper: give one designer one real page in each tool and time it.
This is the question that decides most jobs, and it is the one design-led comparisons skip.
Wix Studio bundles the business layer. Ecommerce with custom product and category pages, checkout customisation, 100-plus payment providers and point-of-sale options. Bookings. Events with ticketing and RSVPs. Specific solutions for restaurants and hotels. Blog and portfolio. One vendor, one dashboard, one bill, one support line when something breaks at 9pm.
Webflow is strongest as a CMS-driven marketing platform. Its Collections and editorial workflow are excellent for content. Ecommerce exists on separate plans (Standard from $29 per month at the time of writing, with a 2% transaction fee), but it is not where Webflow concentrates its effort, and bookings, memberships, ticketing, email marketing and CRM are third-party services you select, wire up and then quietly own forever.
Run through this list with the client before you choose a tool:
If three or more of those are a yes, a bundled platform usually beats an integration stack, unless the design brief is exceptional enough to justify the extra moving parts and the extra monthly fees.
Both tools now have a restricted editing mode, but they arrived at it differently.
In Wix Studio, a client's access follows the role you assign. If their role covers content editing only, they open content mode, where they can update text and images but cannot change your design. Give them a broader role, such as co-owner, and they can open the full editor, with what they can do still governed by the role. For agencies, this is the practical answer to the oldest problem in the business: the client who drags a heading into the footer.
Webflow spent 2026 replacing the legacy Editor with content editing on the Webflow canvas. Client seats became available to Freelancer and Agency Workspaces on 2 February 2026, automatic migration started on 4 May 2026, and the legacy Editor became unavailable from 4 August 2026. Workspaces received free seats in the migration (a client seat for freelancer and agency plans, a limited seat on the smaller workspace plans), but beyond those, seats are a per-seat cost that grows with the number of client contacts who need access.
Price this into your retainer rather than absorbing it. If you are putting together or revising packages, our notes on monthly website care plans and web design pricing packages cover what to include and what to charge for separately.
"You own your code" is Webflow's strongest argument in a pitch, so it is worth knowing the small print before you repeat it to a client.
Code export is available on paid Workspace plans, not on site plans. The export gives you HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets for the static side of the site. It does not include CMS content, user accounts, ecommerce databases, code components and their functionality, or localised pages and content. Site search and forms will not work on an exported site, and Webflow cites GDPR compliance for the form limitation. CMS items can be exported as CSV, one collection at a time.
So export is a solid answer for a brochure or campaign site that could be rehosted anywhere, and a much weaker answer for a CMS-driven, transactional or multilingual site, which is exactly the kind of site that usually justifies Webflow in the first place. Be precise with clients: they can take the front end, not the running system.
Wix Studio has no equivalent export. If front-end ownership is a hard requirement, the Wix route is headless: build the front end on your own stack and call Wix business features through its APIs. That is a developer project, not a design project, and it changes who maintains the site.
Agencies lose more money on hand-off than on design, so compare this properly.
Webflow gives you two routes. Client payments keeps the site in your workspace while the client pays for the site plan; the help centre notes one client per site, that a client-paid plan cannot be moved to another site in the workspace, and that enabling it mid-cycle at hand-off earns the workspace a prorated credit against future purchases. Alternatively, a site transfer moves a site on an active plan from a Freelancer or Agency Workspace into the client's own workspace, keeping the plan and key settings, after which clients are prompted to reauthorise Webflow apps so integrations keep working. Watch bandwidth: if a site has been over its limit for two consecutive months, the client has to buy a plan matching the usage before the transfer completes.
Wix handles it as an ownership transfer. You start it from the site's actions, the client accepts the emailed invitation within three days, and they enter their own billing details for future renewals. The Premium plan, the domain and Wix mailboxes bought from Wix can move with the site. Two details catch partners out: add yourself as a collaborator when you transfer, or you lose the partner points that site earned, and your Custom Branding is removed once a site sits in another Wix account. Payment accounts and some campaign data do not travel either.
Wix's partner programme is points based, with four levels: Pioneer (0 to 900 points), Creator (1,000), Icon (2,000) and Legend (5,000 or more). Priority support, Custom Branding, revenue share, 10GB storage, an agency profile and the ability to sell Studio templates sit at the first level. The partner badge arrives at Creator. Marketplace eligibility and access to the Partner Success Team arrive at Icon. Wix advertises a revenue share of 20% or more on Studio Premium plans you buy and publish, and its benefits table does not publish the rate per level, so confirm your own rate in the workspace. The partner terms also require you to create and buy at least one new Premium or Studio Premium site as first owner to stay eligible.
Webflow renamed its expert programme the Certified Partner Program and, in 2026, added Webflow Foundations as the entry point: a track for freelancers and agencies to earn commission and work towards certified status. If inbound leads from a marketplace matter to you, look at how many of your target clients actually search there before you count on it.
| Cost line | Wix Studio | Webflow |
|---|---|---|
| Building, before launch | No charge to open a workspace and build | Paid Freelancer or Agency Workspace for client work and export |
| Per client site, monthly | Light $17 (cannot take payments), Core $29, Business $39, Business Elite $159 | Basic $15, CMS/Premium $25 |
| Selling online | Included on the mid plans upwards | Ecommerce plan from $29 with a 2% fee on Standard |
| Extra people | Roles and permissions within the workspace | Full, limited and client seats priced per seat |
| Large or enterprise clients | Wix Enterprise, sales-led, no public price | Enterprise and top tiers, sales-led |
Those are US list prices on annual billing at the time of writing (October 2026) and both vendors moved prices during the year, so check before you quote. Webflow restructured its site plans in 2026, merging its CMS and Business tiers into a single Premium tier, which is worth knowing if you are working from an older proposal template.
Both of these tools assume a designer builds the site by hand. A growing number of agency clients, especially at the lower end of the market, want something else: a decent site fast, then the ability to change it by asking. If that is the work you are being asked to do at $500 a site, hand-building in Webflow will not pay, and even Wix Studio is more craft than the budget supports.
WebNewBiz is built for that lane. You describe the business in plain language and the AI drafts a complete site (pages, layout, copy) ready to edit in the browser, and the AI Copilot changes copy, sections, pages, design and images by chat. For agencies the point is the wrapper: white-label with your own name, logo, colours and favicon, clients logging into a panel branded as your agency on your own dashboard domain such as app.youragency.com, your own SMTP for emails, agency-branded invites and invoice PDFs. You create client accounts, put each on a plan with limits, suspend a client, log in as a client to do the work for them, or let them self-serve. You sell at your own prices through your own packages and storefront page, with payments going to your own Stripe or PayPal account. There is also a REST Partner API with single sign-on links and webhooks if you want websites inside your own product.
On the client's side, the same build includes an online store with card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay, an AI CRM from the Growth plan that scores leads and chases invoices, an AI funnel builder with 26 templates, and workflow automations on triggers such as a form submission or a date. Retail prices are $1 for the first month, then Lite $9, Starter $29, Growth $79, Pro $149 and Ultimate $199 per month, which gives you a cost base to build packages on.
The honest limits matter here. There is no file export: content and the domain move, but the layout gets rebuilt elsewhere, so this is a weaker answer than Webflow for a client who insists on owning the code. Design control is narrower than Webflow's Designer. The AI first draft still needs your edits, your photos and your facts. The app ecosystem and community are smaller than Wix's or Webflow's, the platform is younger and smaller than Duda, GoHighLevel or Webflow's agency programmes, the CRM only starts at $79, and agency pricing is not published, so it is a conversation rather than a checkout. If you want the detail, see white-label website builder for agencies and white-label CRM for agencies.
Most studios that run well do not standardise on one tool for everything. They standardise on a rule for choosing. Something like this:
Then write down which tool each live client is on and who is responsible for it. That document is worth more than any comparison table, including this one.
If you want to look wider before committing, we have a fuller round-up of Wix Studio alternatives for agencies, a head to head on Duda vs Wix Studio for agencies, and a practical guide to reselling websites to clients covering packaging, margins and who holds the account.
Is Wix Studio or Webflow better for an agency?
Neither is better across the board. Webflow suits studios where design precision sells the work and someone technical keeps maintaining the site. Wix Studio suits studios whose clients need a store, bookings or events in the box and want to log in and edit content themselves. Choose per client, not per agency.
Can you export your site from Wix Studio or Webflow?
Webflow offers code export on paid Workspace plans, not on site plans, and the export leaves out CMS content, user accounts, ecommerce databases, code components and localised content. Site search and forms do not work on an exported site. Wix Studio has no code export, though you can build a front end on another stack against Wix Headless APIs.
Which costs the client less per site?
On US prices with annual billing at the time of writing (October 2026), Wix plans run Light $17 (which cannot take payments), Core $29, Business $39 and Business Elite $159 per month. Webflow site plans start at Basic $15 and CMS/Premium $25, with ecommerce from $29 on Standard plus a 2% transaction fee. Webflow also charges for the Freelancer or Agency Workspace and for extra seats, which Wix does not charge for while you build.
Can clients edit the site without breaking the design?
Yes on both, with limits. Wix Studio has a content mode where a client with a content-only role can change text and images but cannot change the design. Webflow uses a content editor role and the Webflow canvas: its legacy Editor was retired during 2026, with client seats introduced in February, automatic migration from May and the legacy Editor unavailable from August 2026.
Can I white-label Wix Studio or Webflow?
Not properly. Wix partner Custom Branding puts your agency brand on email invitations, site dashboards and free-site banners, and Wix itself notes that partners cannot fully customise the client dashboard; branding is also removed if a site moves to another Wix account. Webflow clients log into Webflow. If an agency-branded login on your own dashboard domain matters, you need a platform built for that, such as WebNewBiz white-label.
Do I need to know CSS to use Webflow?
In practice, yes. Webflow's Designer maps closely to CSS layout and class naming, so the first week is hard without that background and the payoff comes later. Wix Studio's canvas and responsive layout tools are quicker to pick up, and it still accepts custom CSS, JavaScript, npm packages and backend functions when you need them.
No pressure either way: if your work is design-led, Webflow or Wix Studio will serve you better than we will. If a chunk of your pipeline is small businesses who want a site fast and then want to change it by asking, have a look at our AI website builder, or try the free AI Website Preview and see what it drafts from one sentence about a real client. You can start for $1 for the first month to test it properly on a live job. When you are ready to put your own brand on it, talk to us about white-label and we will walk through client accounts, your pricing and the hand-off.
